WHAT IS MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) massage is a gentle massage technique that focuses on the lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system is responsible for many functions, including circulating fluids within the body, reacting to harmful bacteria and cancer cells, absorbing excess fat in the lower intestine, and dealing with potentially harmful cell biproducts. The lymphatic system functioning properly is essential to our health. Certain factors may lead to a compromised or weakened lymphatic system, such as; surgery, infection, cancer/radiation, injury or primary lymphedema.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage massages are aimed at ensuring the lymphatic system is circulating properly. This technique can be very helpful at draining fluid retention, reducing swelling and help eliminate symptoms of lymphedema.
WHAT IS ORTHOPEDIC MASSAGE?
Orthopedic massage is a more therapeutic and medical-based modality, which uses specific anatomical manipulation techniques to achieve, expeditious, measurable, safe, and meaningful results. Orthopedic massage may also assist clients in recovering from injuries or mitigating post-surgical trauma. The modality shares similarities with other techniques such as rolfing (a form of intense and aggressive structural rebalancing) as well as physical therapy.
Orthopedic massage practitioners have a deep and unique understanding of the ways soft tissues (muscles, tendons, and fascia) influence the musculoskeletal system. These practitioners understand that pain that manifests in one area of the body can be caused by a misalignment, adhesion, or muscle tension in, what seems like, an unrelated area. Orthopedic Massage practitioners seek to find the causes of pain and misalignment in the physical connections between muscles, soft tissues, tendons, bones, and fascia and to correct them. Orthopedic massage would likely be an excellent complimentary treatment to something such as physical therapy and chiropractic care.
Orthopedic massage can benefit patients with many symptoms and conditions, it has been shown to be particularly effective for certain physical injuries, including but not limited to:
-
Back pain and spasms
-
Carpal tunnel syndrome
-
Frozen shoulder
-
Knee pain
-
Plantar fasciitis
-
Tendonitis
-
Tennis and golfers’ elbows
-
Whiplash injuries
