Striking a Balance:

You may have been hearing around our office lately about upper crossed syndrome...

Upper crossed syndrome (UCS) occurs when the muscles in the neck, shoulders become over stretched. This happens due to our forward folding postures as we drive, work on the computer or spend too much time on our phones. The result....poor posture.

The muscles most affected are the upper trapezius and the levator scapula, which are the back muscles of the shoulders and neck. They are underused and become weak. Then, the muscles in the front of the chest, called the major and minor pectoralis, become tight and shortened.

Our bodies want to work in the least amount of effort to keep the skeletal system stabilized so muscles will overstretch and their opposing muscles will shorten and become tight to accommodate whatever posture we are in most often.

This issue can actually lead to pain and injuries like: biceps tendonitis, headaches, rotator cuff impingement, shoulder instability, and thoracic outlet syndrome

On the yoga mat, I have been sharing with you through this past year about the muscular "chains" in our body. Heart opening poses like Cobra or Camel as well as side bends with arm variations can all assist with postural rebalancing. How you approach your yoga practice and healing is 100% in your control. Some days you may need more passive stretches and others you may want more active engagement like Cow Face Pose below. Whatever your approach... they all benefit UCS. If you are unsure of technique or which variation is best for you, give Micki a call and she can schedule a 30 minute spot specific session with you.

OUR focus on the yoga mat is always anatomical alignment and safe healing. We encourage the use of variations and props to meet you where you are and empower you to learn how to heal and transform the body for a high quality of life.

Upper crossed syndrome can be corrected with a knowledgeable massage therapist and proper stretch and strength building program. Our wellness team can work together with you. Please call our office at 910-278-5877 to schedule a 60 or 90 minute appointment with our highly trained staff.

Our office has also created several videos to assist you with Self Care at home and hope you will take some time to visit

to view our newest videos on Upper Crossed Syndrome.

As always,

Be well.
